American Concrete Institute

(ACI)

This Page is dedicated to the American Concrete Institute for all the hard work they have put into organizing a "State of the Art" report on the properties, and construction techniques, which are valuable to those interested in Pervious Concrete. Their contribution has proved invaluable to the understanding and acceptance of Pervious Concrete as a building material.

  • "Founded in 1904 and headquartered in Farmington Hills, Michigan, ACI is a technical and educational society with 16,000 members and 96 chapters in 34 countries.

  • ACI has produced more than 400 technical documents, reports, guides, specifications, and codes for the best use of concrete; conducts more than 125 educational seminars each year; and has 13 different certification programs for concrete practitioners, as well as a scholarship program to promote careers in the industry."

  • In 2001 ACI created a new Committee titled: "Pervious Concrete". The Committee was organized by Don Wade, currently employed by Magruder Construction. During the last Committee meeting , held during the ACI Fall Convention (November, 2005) in Kansas City, Missouri, the Committee approved their first document for publication defining the "state-of-the-art" of Pervious Concrete. The Committee (522) has also worked with the NRMCA to produce a "Pervious Concrete Contractor Certification" program. Don Wade is also author of the Training Manual used in the program.

  • Committee 522 is also involved in developing a standard set of "specifications" that will eventually be published as the standard reference guide for the construction of Pervious Concrete pavements. A document has already been produced by the Committee, and is currently being peer-reviewed.

  • ACI also has several other Committees involved in the Environmental application of Pervious Concrete. If someone would like to be on the "front-lines" in the introduction of Pervious Concrete to the Construction Community, Environmentalist and Stormwater Management officials, then they should look at becoming involved in the ACI Committee 522, or one of the other Committees looking at the Environmental aspects of concrete in general. You may contact ACI direct through the ACI Web Site, or contact Don Wade about your interest in becoming a member.
