Magruder Construction Co., Inc.

Pervious Concrete Division

Magruder Construction is a Heavy-Civil Contractor headquartered in Eolia, Missouri, with a Pervious Concrete Division in Sanford, Florida.

These are pictures taken of some of Magruder's in-house crews. The first picture was taken during a training seminar where Magruder crews trained other contractors on how to properly place and finish pervious concrete. The placement took place at a Rinker Materials plant in Tampa, Florida. The second picture is of a placement taking place in Savannah, Georgia. (Notice the specialized rollers that are required to "finish" pervious concrete pavements.)

The Magruder, Pervious Concrete Division, has completed contracts across the U.S.

from Florida to California.

Magruder Construction is turning gray concrete into green parking lots.

The “in-house” construction crews of Magruder have more than 80-years of combined experience in Pervious Concrete. Magruder personnel were involved in some of the first projects ever completed in Florida, Missouri, Ohio, Nevada, Georgia and California. Don Wade, Program Manager, with Magruder Construction, organized the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) Committee 522 “Pervious Concrete” in 2001, and was commissioned by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) to write the Training Manual used to Certify Pervious Concrete Contractors across the Nation. Mr. Wade has also published several articles in local and national magazines on pervious concrete pavements and stormwater management. (See article published in Concrete Monthly on Parking Lots.)

Magruder Construction also works with local, state and National organizations to promote the use of Pervious Concrete as an integral part of a stormwater management tool (dual-use system) and “green-building” system. Many communities are adopting the use of the dual-use system for their stormwater management Best Management Practice (BMP). (See also the new EPA - Green Infrastructure, and the NIBS - Federal Green Construction Guide for Specifiers.)

Pervious concrete pavements and the dual-use (Parking in the Pond) system are currently recognized as systems that can be used to apply for LEED Certifications. Credit is not given for the use of the material, but only for specific applications. Magruder Construction should be contacted for projects that wish to explore the use of pervious concrete and how to maximize its applications to achieve the most points.

Magruder Construction is currently working with Owners, Developers, General Contractors, and Engineers to help them design pervious concrete into their projects as a design-build team. Their bonding capacity is over $10-million. Magruder Construction should be contacted for all Request to Bid or as a Sole Source Contractor for the Pervious Concrete Pavement (Material & Labor) for any size project across the U.S. (See the Sole Source Justification page.)

When considering the unique properties of pervious concrete, and not all Contractors have equal experience, it is of the best interest for everyone that only NRMCA Certified Contractors be used.

NRMCA Certification is mandatory for Concrete Contractors on many projects involving the construction of pervious concrete pavements. There are two levels of Certification, Technician and Craftsman. A Technicians Certification is awarded if the applicant attends a one-day class and passes the exam. No experience is required. The Craftsman Certification is awarded only after the applicant has passed the exam, and has a proven record of 3000-hours of experience. Magruder Construction has three NRMCA Certified Craftsmen, and many more Certified as Technicians. This gives Magruder Construction the capabilities of making decisions on the job that can only be made by someone with related experience.

Important: Because of the lack of standardized test for quality control and acceptance of Pervious Concrete, it is critical that whoever is making the decisions for acceptance of both the fresh concrete, and the finished pavement, that they are qualified to do so. The decision-maker must have adequate knowledge and experience to recognize the essential properties of Pervious Concrete, and know how to make field-adjustments. (Note: Both the NRMCA, and the National Institute of Building Sciences, recognize that only NRMCA Certified "Craftsmen" have the 1500-3000 hours of experience necessary as a basis of qualification.)
